Powerdrill Pottery
Place: Various Locations, DK
Type: Ongoing Artistic Project
Date: 2020 – Present
Powerdrill Pottery is a technique in which I centre a cylindrical stoneware block weighing around 2.5 kg on a turntable (kavalette). I next manipulate the clay with instruments like an angle iron, a spoon, or a bent steel rod, all of which rotate quickly using a power drill. With experience, I can obtain a large rotational speed, which, while shooting chunks of clay around the studio, helps in the hollowing of the shape.
The tool profile used produces many explosive and repetitive machine-like textures over the surface. Because of the centrifugal force involved, the approach has inherent restrictions in terms of item size. However, I am constantly experimenting with pushing these limitations and scaling up the forms to explore new creative possibilities.
