12 moons:
The Three Firing Sculptures
is an artistic project that combines ceramic sculptures, historical references, and a magical, performative process. Each sculpture is unique and undergoes an intense firing process where creation, heat, and revelation play a central role. The project is part of the 12 Moons program by Kosmisk Kulturselskab at Månepladsen in Lejre, which brings together artists and the public to explore the cosmic links between the community, earth, and the universe.

Kosmisk Kulturselskab (Cosmic Culture Society) is a locally based organization in Lejre, Denmark, dedicated to creating magical, community-building experiences through art, spirituality, and creativity.

With projects like 12 MOONS, we invited people to full moon events that explored the connections between humans, the earth, and the cosmos. Over the course of a year, 12 MOONS celebrated each full moon with magical events in nature, featuring art, storytelling, music, and walks. These experiences allowed participants to co-create unique moments under the moonlight.

Trilobite Fossil
The first sculpture is a massive trilobite, inspired by fossils discovered in Denmark and their ancient link to life on Earth. The sculpture was triggered by the trilobite's segmented form, which has parallels with both geological history and modern science fiction. The trilobite serves as a visual and symbolic link between primitive life on Earth and cosmic space.

Ancient Ceramics

The second sculpture is a large installation inspired by ancient ceramics. Consisting of seven disk-shaped slabs, this sculpture represents a technological fusion of ancient aesthetics and modern functionality. Built using the Stone Age coil technique and crafted from lean red clay, the sculpture becomes an impressive heat structure, allowing fire and heat to travel through the clay. When revealed, the glowing sculpture will resemble a giant heat exchanger, a symbolic bridge between ancient pottery and the technological era of today.

Stele D of Quirigua - a Maya tribute in glowing clay

The final sculpture is a 2.5-meter-tall Maya stele that is ceremonially revealed under the full moon's light following a 12-hour fire procedure. The sculpture is created from a 3D scan of a stone stele showing Maya ruler Kʼakʼ Chan Yopaat. The Maya civilisation had a strong connection to the moon, and this stele commemorates lunar worship and the mythological past. The sculpture, built at Månepladsen, explores the intricate connection between our perception of time and cosmic events. It is positioned with a view of the rising full moon and interacts with the surrounding environment of stone circles and burial grounds.
