My Apiary is an original creative project that explores the close collaboration between humans and nature. I worked intimately with bee colonies to create sculptural pieces that examine and emphasize the fascinating dynamics of the beehive, as well as the complex interactions within the bee community.
By using beehives both as a medium and a partner, I established an environment where the bees built their wax structures in geometric patterns, blending the elements of randomness with intention. This collaboration between nature and art highlights the delicate balance between control and chaos.
I have been working with bees on and off since 2010, when I took a beekeeping course. Since then, I have been very interested in alternative beekeeping practices, particularly the bees' work with wax and providing an environment in which they can flourish and naturally expand the hive in parallel with the colony's growth.
My Apiary, an installation featuring two bee families, was displayed in the forest edge of Vibevadgård as part of the art festival "WHEN NATURE CALLS - Sensory Encounters at Vibevadgård" on September 8th, 2024. Through a collection of wax sculptures and an observation hive, the audience got a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see the bees at work and learn about their important role in the ecosystem.
